Yixing, the Father of Tea– By Wu De

We have been planning to start a whole series of articles about Yixing, including several translations of articles and parts of books written by the world’s leading experts, all in upcoming issues. For now, we thought we would start with an article introducing the “Pottery City” itself. And you can look forward to an Yixing article in every issue from now on.

First off, I want to say I really appreciate the work you all are doing. As for the topic of Yixing, I am very excited for the next few issues. As you said on the front page of this site, a lot of the information out there on tea, and this seems to be especially the case with Yixing pots, is from merchants, and it tends to be very lacking. There are tons of pots for sale, but little information about what makes for a good pot and so forth. I am hoping that in the next few articles you will get into some of that. Also, if there are any other resources out there that you know of concerning Yixing, I would love to hear about them. Once again, thank you so much for all this great information!

Indeed, the world of Yixing is vast and learning moves at a snail’s pace, even for Chinese tea lovers, let alone English-speakers. After this introduction, we do intend to translate some articles as well as share some more of our experience learning these years. It’s all in the clay: experiment with, handle and observe as many pots as possible, noticing differences in the tea liquor that results. Stay tuned.
